While using a computer, unknowingly we accumulate a lot of clutter on our devices. Randomly taking backup of our smartphones may create a lot of duplicate files, photos videos and stuff that takes up our precious space. There are various ways to free up storage on Mac. To view your storage space on Mac, click on the Apple icon, go to ‘About this Mac’ and select ‘Storage’ and the disk storage will be displayed.

Delete System Junk

Cleaning your system junk may reclaim 3-5 GB of your storage space. App cache data is generally stored in ~/Library/Caches folder and the system cache data is lives in /Library/Caches. If you are not aware of how to clean junk from Mac and clear the temporary cache folders, you may follow these steps.

Step 1. Open the ‘Finder’ window and click on the ‘Go to Folder’ option in the ‘Go’ menu.

Step 2. Type ~/Library/Caches and press enter.

Step 3. Open all the folders one by one and delete everything from them.

Step 4. Go to the ‘Finder’ window again and type /Library/Caches.

Step 5. Follow the same process of entering every folder to delete whatever is there.

Step 3. Drag and drop the icon of the program that you wish to remove from your Mac to Trash.

Step 4. If you are a guest user, it may ask for authentication. Enter the user name and password to continue deleting the app.

Step 5. All the removed items stay in Trash for 30 days. You will need to empty the Trash to completely remove it from your Mac.

To empty the main Trash (Recycle Bin), hold down the Ctrl key and click on the Trash or right-click on the Trash icon on the dock and click on ‘Empty Trash’. To remove junk from the applications, just follow the same process the empty Trash from specific application.

Step 1. Open Safari browser and select the ‘Preferences’ option.

Step 2. Select the ‘Privacy’ tab with a hand sign on the top of the new window.

Step 3. Select the ‘Manage Website Data’ option to list details.

Step 4. You will find browsing data via cookies, database, or local storage from sites that you visited. You can see all of them listed here.

Step 5. You can remove them by selecting all at a time. Click on the ‘Remove All’ button to remove all site’s data.

Clean Up Downloads Folder

Whatever we download gets accumulated in the Downloads Folder. At times, we download setup files, installation files and other files that are just for one time use however they still lay there for months. These files take a lot of space and hamper system performance. People normally tend to forget cleaning this folder.

Just go to the ‘Finder’ and head look for Downloads folder and start deleting everything that you don’t need anymore. The best practice is to sort by file size to quickly delete bulky files and free up disk space on Mac.
