Guide on how to update your WordPress

An updated WordPress platform provides a fix to bugs and guarantees speed, security, and compatibility. Hence, it is always advisable to upgrade to the latest WordPress version. When a new WordPress version is available, you’ll receive an update message in your WordPress Admin Screen. In this message, click on the button to update your WordPress. The actual process of updating is rapid and straightforward, but there are a couple of things you should keep a note of before upgrading to make sure everything goes out smoothly.

Before You Update

Take the following precautions to ensure you don’t run into any complications before you start the updating process:

Backup your website

It is a great idea to back up your web site before you launch. That means you can recover your web site if there are any issues. Backups ensure you have a plan of action that will help you out if something goes wrong. Also, it is a safe thing to do while using a different hosting platform.

For your database on the site — most hosting services allow you to do this either through PHPMyAdmin or with the help of their backup tools. For information on how to back up your database, refer to the documentation of your hosting service.

Your site files, templates, and plugins are again backed-up automatically with StudioPress pages; however, if you like, you can manually back up your data via FTP or a backup plugin.

Update your plugins and theme frameworks

Developers typically have heads-up on forthcoming WordPress updates and also upgrade their plugins and theme frameworks (such as Genesis) to retain compatibility and allow the use of new technologies. Be sure to update all your WordPress plugins and themes before upgrading to prevent any compatibility problems later.

To confirm that plugin and theme updates are available, go to Dashboard> Updates in your WordPress Dashboard.

Update WordPress via the Dashboard

When you have taken the above steps, it is time to switch to WordPress. You’ll see a notice at the top of your Dashboard whenever an update is available. Go to Dashboard> Updates or click Update now to go to the Updates screen to start the process.

Click Again to refresh the list if you are not able to see the note or if the update list is empty, but you realize there’s a new version of WordPress available. Click on ‘Install Now’ to install WordPress when the Update appears.

Manual & Automatic Updates

You can update manually or (depending on your web host) configure automatic updates if you face trouble using the WordPress updater, or prefer to use an alternative method of updating.

Manual Update Via FTP

You can manually update WordPress over FTP. It is essential that you carefully follow the steps so that your plugin, theme data, or other items are not accidentally deleted. Before doing a manual update, we recommend that you follow these steps before you update.

  • Download the most recent version of the WordPress zip file.
  • Dischip the file from your computer. You will only see a folder called WordPress.
  • Go to Plugins> Installed plugins in your Dashboard for WordPress, and uninstall all the plugins. Deactivating plugins will not remove the plugins from your site.
  • Download the most recent version of the WordPress zip file.
  • (Optional) Compare your current wp-config.php file with the new wp-config.php file you just downloaded. If you wish to add additional features to your wp-config file in the latest edition, you can update your wp-config.php file with the code from the wp-config-sample.php file, and upload it over FTP. Make sure your wp-config.php data doesn’t alter or delete any of the authentication keys or database settings.
  • Visit the administration page at < www.yoursite.com>/wp-admin. You may need to re-login. WordPress identifies the need for an upgrade to the database, and if so, gives you a link (which might look like < www.yoursite.com>/wp-admin / upgrade.php) to start the Update. Follow the button to update your database and follow the instructions to be compatible with WordPress’s latest version.

When you are done with uploading all of the new files and directories to your web host, reload your site and click through different pages and functions to make sure everything looks and works as anticipated. Be sure to reactivate any plugins that you have deactivated before updating.

Conclusion:

This article will guide you through the WordPress update. If, after the update, you encounter any issues, you can always restore your backup and replace the files from the archive folder with the ones from your previous version. But, we would always recommend you to take help from the experts like WordPress Expert and WordPress Support Services, because installing an update requires a lot of precision and can cause great trouble if not done properly.
